Please share your links and ideas for resources for the CPLP study group.

I've posted a page called Test Preparation with my comments on the exam if they help anyone.  E

One of my cohorts in another study group came up with this way to remember Kolb.  I thought it was helpful.  I asked for her permission to share with this group.

Here are the clues I use to remember Kolb’s model quadrants:

Accommodators are accommodating people who like people and are very actively and practically getting things done. They are not shy when learning new things, so “Why not?” or “What if?”  Let’s go!

Divergers dive deeply into the details then help others see the big picture. They like calm waters and learn by  conversing with others to solve the world’s problems logically.

Assimilators are serious, scientists and like being students during lectures.

Convergers are actively and independently constructing,  so there’s no time to talk with others. CBT is the way to go since there can only be one right answer.

Let me know if that works for you?

Sincerely,

Alice B. Bradley, Principal

Here's how I remember Gagne's 9 events of instruction -- silly but it helps.  E

How about a cheer for innovative instruction. "GO R&D UP FAR!"
g = gain attention
o = objectives
r = recall prior learning
d = deliver new content
u = (enhance) understanding
p = practice
f = feedbacl
a = assess
r = resources

This is the verbiage I use to try and differentiate between the four primary theories of learning and instruction.

1.  "I object to you trying to control my behavior... reward me instead." (Objective centered, behaviorism, rewards, predict and control behavior)

2.  "Think about it.  Based on your experience, did this process give you any new insights?"  (Cognativism, experience centered, how you process, store and retrieve info)

3.  "We strongly believe you have a developmental opportunity! You can teach an old dog new tricks"   (old dog/new tricks = learning changes as adults age, We =cultural, strongly = physical, believe = psychologial, developmentalism, opportunity centered.)

4.  "Subjectively, I think Pedagogy punishes adults but rewards children."  (Subjective centered, pedagogy, rewards and punishments.)

and finally, "Realistically, your memory is always "under construction".  This isn't a problem, we'll create an environment with tools like your personal interpretation of the situation and it's context."

OK, it's a bit of a stretch.  Constructivism, interpret info based on their personal experiences.  Focuses on creating realistic learning environments where learners can problem solve based on a realistic situation and context.

They may be silly but they help me remember the differences.  Maybe they will help others as well.  E

A good way to think of appreciative inquiry.

Check out the ISD Handbook on Big Dog and Little Dog's Performance Juxtaposition website. Strange name but a good amount of understandable materials. The site also has information on learning and training issues.  --KS

Pareto Principle:  http://www.businessballs.com/quotes.htm#pareto_principle_pareto's_law

A good book on how people move through the change process is called Managing the Dynamics of Change by Dr. Jerald Jellison.  He has a five stage model where stage one is the status quo, stage 2 the change is implemented and morale drops, fear increases, etc.  Stage two you bottom out.  Stage three is when you start to climb out, but things still look bad to those going through the change.  The difference between two and three is that in two, they're very negative, holding on to status quo.  In three, some of the people are actually moving toward "it might be ok".  Stage 4 is when you're on the way to performance....and in stage 5 you reach optimal performance.

It's relatively inexpensive and an easy read.  Ellen

If anyone is interested,

Feel free to join the Chicago CPLP Prep group on Linked in.  I moderate it...and basically we've just been using it to post additional resources for the knowledge exam.  You might find something there that would help....just thought I'd offer.  Talk with you tomorrow.  Ellen

Need the ASTD Learning System?

I have a September copy of the ASTD Learning System + Practice CD for which I paid $479; there were minor updates to four or so chapters in October. They are downloadable for free at the certification website.

Four of the 10 books are unmarked. Only 4 are highlighted through the entire book. In the other two, there is highlighting in only the first couple of chapters. They are all in excellent condition (I treasure books and tend to take very good care of them).

I noticed that some folks are looking for current used sets. I would be willing to part with my set of books and CD for $325. Please let the group know this set is available. If anyone is interested, they may email me at douglasasamuels@bellsouth.net or give me a call at 404.433.0000.

Thanks, Doug
